How do I get a CPCS card?
1) Complete Construction Skills Health and Safety touch screen test
All candidates must have passed the 'Touch Screen Safety Test' within the last 2 years when
entering the scheme for the first time or when adding a category, through either full foundation
or experienced worker assessment route. The Construction Skills Health & Safety Touch screen
test can be taken at a test centre of your choice.
To book a test you will need a Construction Skills registration number or, If not already registered,
you need to give the candidate's name, address, Date of birth and N.I. number. You will then be given
your Construction Skills registration number.
The test can then be booked by calling 0344 994 4488 where you will be able to arrange a date and time
that suits you. You will receive a confirmation and revision book including 500 test questions and answers.
The cost is £17.50 for the test + approximately £10 for a revision book. Once you have passed the
test you will receive a confirmation of pass sheet before you leave the centre. Keep this safe as you will
need it for future reference.
Note: The test must be successfully completed before the CPCS theory or practical test can take place.
2) Contact the Training Centre
Contact Industrial Training Services on 01245 321130 regarding a course or test of your choice.
We will be able to guide you through the booking process to ensure that you undertake the correct
training/test on the right machinery.
If taking the test option we would suggest 1 year's experience.
Foundation Training
If you take the training option, you will be given a set of ITS study notes, with the questions & answers
to the theory test, further training and underpinning knowledge of the question & answers, Practical training
will include general Safety training, pre-start checks & operator maintenance, Safe operation of the machine.
3) On successful completion of the CPCS theory & practical test
You will be awarded a red trained operative card.
We recommend that you start collecting evidence of operating experience on the equipment from the start,
as this will assist in the completion of the NVQ level 2.
4) Within two years, candidates will be required to complete an NVQ Level 2 for the machine category
If you don't complete your NVQ Level 2 within two years you will need to apply and register with a centre
for the appropriate NVQ, and then apply for a years extension to allow the time to complete your NVQ.
Note: After the 12 months grace period has expired if you have a genuine reason for not applying for your
Blue card for example an illness, then you may appeal to the CPCS.
5) Work towards your NVQ and Blue Experienced Operators Card
In order to achieve an NVQ level 2, contact us at ITS and we will arrange to get you registered and inducted
into the scheme. We will send an assessor out to site to assess you for your NVQ (we just watch you work and
ask questions, and help you collect evidence, this is not another test). You can renew your card at this point
or alternatively apply when your card is due to expire.
6) Renewing your Blue Experienced Operators Card
You now have 5 years to record 300 hours in your new log book on your trained category of plant. After the
5 years you have a 12 months grace period in which to renew your card on successfully completing the
Health & Safety test, if you fail to do so you may need to be re-tested.
If you are unable to achieve the 300 operating hours the operator can elect to carry out an on site
assessment in each category of plant.
Note: After the 12 months grace period has expired if you have a genuine reason for not renewing your
Blue card for example an illness, then you may appeal to the CPCS.
